Artists Statement
I became fascinated with the structure of different bird skulls working with Karen Willenbrink Johnsen and Jasen Johnsen, twice in Turkey, once at Corning, and recently in my San Diego studio. Jasen is a master of the skull and I devoted most of my time working with him and understanding the evolution of birds’ skeletal structure. There is quite a difference in the skull of a predatory bird and an herbivorous one.
I created my “specimen” collection to document the progress of my skills. The Khonsu is a little wink and a nod.
