Artists Statement

A rhyton is a drinking vessel used in many parts of the ancient world. Most ancient glass rhytons are of the Roman period. They are in the form of a horn, sometimes with the head of an animal at the tip or supporting the vessel.

I’ve spent many hours in museums worldwide looking at rhytons. I find them both beautiful and celebratory.

When I sculpted my toucan head last year in Istanbul I knew I’d found the perfect combination of history and whimsy.
