Tunnel Books: From Flat to Three Dimensions

What if a book could travel flat through the mail, then open into a three-dimensional world?

In this hands-on workshop, participants will create a tunnel book—a fascinating artists’ book structure that transforms from a compact, mailable format into a dimensional scene when opened. Layers of paper recede into the book, creating depth, perspective, and the illusion of looking through a small window into another world.

We’ll explore the basic construction of the tunnel format, including how to create the folded supports and layered pages that give the book its three-dimensional effect. Participants will also learn how to design their layers to create depth and visual movement, while keeping the finished book able to fold flat for storage or mailing.

No previous bookbinding experience is necessary. All materials and tools will be provided. Come ready to experiment with paper, space, perspective, and a little bit of bookbinding magic!
