Rhyming Poetry & Watercolor Collage
Rhyming Poetry & Watercolor Collage
Instructor: Liz Walters
Date: June 26, 2026
Time: 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM
Discover the joy of creating art and poetry in this relaxed, beginner-friendly workshop designed for everyday people who want to explore creativity without pressure or perfection. In this unique mixed-media class, participants will experiment with approachable rhyming poetry techniques while creating a beautiful watercolor leaf collage.
We’ll begin by reading a few simple rhyming poems and discussing easy techniques for crafting poetry that feels natural, expressive, and fun. Inspired by prompts and examples from Liz’s own beginner-friendly poetry journal, students will begin developing their own original poems.
As ideas begin to flow, we’ll explore watercolor painting techniques including wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, layering, and creating both single-color and multicolor gradients. Participants will paint individual watercolor leaves that can later be cut out and assembled into a collaborative tree-inspired collage. Working in smaller pieces makes this process especially welcoming for novice artists, encouraging experimentation without fear of “ruining” a larger work.
While watercolor pieces dry, students will continue shaping their poems before assembling their finished artwork.
By the end of class, each participant will leave with:
An original rhyming poem
A completed watercolor collage
New creative techniques for both writing and painting
Inspiration to continue creating at home
No prior poetry or art experience is necessary — just curiosity and a willingness to play with words and color.

Seeing Differently: Introduction to Photography & Everyday Moments
Date: July 16th 2026
Time: 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM
This class explores the art of portrait photography and how images can capture personality, emotion, and presence. Students will learn techniques for photographing people in ways that tell a story and reveal something meaningful about the subject.
The session begins with a brief look at the history of portraiture, tracing its evolution from formal studio portraits to candid photography and today’s selfie culture. We will discuss how changing styles of portrait-making reflect shifts in technology, culture, and self-expression.
Key concepts will include facial expression, camera angle, and the use of light to shape and enhance a portrait. Through guided practice, participants will create partner portraits or self-portraits, experimenting with different approaches to communicate mood, character, and narrative.
Using the prompt “A portrait that tells a story,” students will create images that go beyond appearance to suggest something about the subject’s life, interests, or personality. The class will conclude with a group sharing and discussion focused on the question: “What does this image say about the person?”
Learning Objectives:
Understand the evolution of portrait photography and its cultural significance.
Use expression, angle, and lighting to create compelling portraits.
Practice photographing people in ways that communicate personality and story.
Develop skills in observing and discussing visual storytelling through portraiture.

Public Reception
Opening Reception
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Join us for the opening of More Than Words: Artist Alliance Exhibition—a collaboration between Front Porch Gallery and the Oceanside Museum of Art’s Artist Alliance.
This exhibition explores the written word as visual language—where letters, symbols, and marks move beyond meaning and become something felt. You’ll find works that whisper, works that sing, and pieces that invite you to slow down and look a little closer.
Some artists have chosen to pair their work with short stories, poems, or lyrics—offering another layer to step into, if you wish.
At Front Porch Gallery, we believe art is more than something you look at—it’s something you experience together. This exhibition reflects that spirit. It’s about expression, interpretation, and the quiet connections that happen when we gather in a shared space.
Come spend the afternoon with us—meet the artists, enjoy light refreshments, and be part of a community that values creativity, curiosity, and belonging.
Because sometimes… what can’t be said in words
is exactly what art is here to hold.

Date: June 4, 2026
Time: 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM

Through conversation, simple creative exercises, and image-making, we’ll focus on noticing light, details, textures, spaces, and small moments that often go overlooked.
The workshop includes a brief introduction to the history and purpose of photography—from early images to the way we use cameras and phones today—as well as basic concepts like framing, composition, and visual storytelling.
Participants will create photographs inspired by the prompt: “Something I usually overlook.” We’ll conclude with group introductions through images and a relaxed sharing discussion.
