Poetry & Painting: Color, Shape, and Words

2-Hour Creative Workshop

Join us for a playful, hands-on workshop that combines acrylic painting and poetry in one creative process. No previous painting or poetry experience is needed—just bring your imagination!

Students will begin by choosing a repeating shape—such as a square, circle, or another simple form—and then select their own subject matter and a large object outline to build their painting around. While the subject is completely open-ended, the process provides a simple structure that allows each artist to create a unique finished piece.

We’ll explore the basics of the color wheel, including analogous colors and how to create tints, tones, and shades by mixing a main color with white, gray, and black. Students will paint their backgrounds first, experimenting with these color combinations and incorporating analogous colors to add energy, contrast, and drama.

As we paint, we’ll also explore the fundamentals of poetry, including line, verse, rhythm, and rhyme schemes. Students will develop their poems alongside their paintings, allowing the two forms of expression to inspire and inform one another.

This workshop is designed to make color theory and poetry feel approachable and fun. The painting process is simple enough for beginners, yet the finished artwork can look surprisingly sophisticated and expressive.

By the end of the 2-hour workshop, each student will have created an original painting and a poem inspired by their creative process.
