Sun Prints (Cyanotypes)
Create Beautiful Blue Botanical Prints with Award-Winning Local Artist David Condit
Join award-winning local artist David Condit for a fun and rewarding introduction to cyanotype printing (also known as sun printing), one of the oldest photographic processes. This easy-to-learn technique offers endless opportunities for creative expression and produces stunning blue-and-white images using the sun's UV light.
In this hands-on class, David will guide you through every step of the cyanotype process. You'll learn how to:
Mix the cyanotype solutions
Coat watercolor paper
Expose your prints to the sun for the best results
Develop your finished prints in water
As the paper is exposed to UV light, the rich blue pigment develops where the light reaches it. Areas blocked from the light remain white, creating striking, high-contrast images.
You'll create prints in two ways:
Using flowers, leaves, or other interestingly shaped objects that you bring to class.
Creating a print from one of your own photographs. If you'd like to explore this option, please send us your image before class so we can prepare a negative for you.
All materials are provided except for the flowers, leaves, or other objects you wish to use in your designs.
Class size is limited to 12 participants, providing plenty of individual attention and guidance from David throughout the workshop.
